I would assume 78/79 would have once been at Kew as they used to be
run with A1 class trams during the 1990's, if yes, then why did

Until Feb 14 1965,route 77,78 79 & 27 were operated by Hawthorn
Depot. I still remember the last day of Hawthorn as when the cars
finished their runs,they went to their new depots.From mememory
729,780,843,848 went to Kew Depot.913,914& 944 went to Glenhuntly.
Most of the remainder went to Camberwell but for some obscure
reason nos 249,312,315,319,322,324,327& 328 went to Brunswick
Depot for storage.All except 319 were returned to service over the
next 4 years.
The last service car into Hawthorn Depot was 912,followed by 850
on a T.M.S.V.charter,which entered the depot at 0055hrs.<I stand
to be corrected on the time> I photographed 582 & 912 leaving
the depot to go to Camberwell Depot at 14oohrs 14-12-65.
