Did 983 work at Camberwell for a while?
I remember 983 and 989 were among the first W6s to be transferred off
Bourke Street. It would have been in 1975 when I was driving at
Camberwell.
Greg,

I think 1000 and 1008 were cars also transferred about this time. We
were not used to such "modern" cars at Camberwell.
Alas, "real" trams disappeared from Camberwell after the opening of
the East Burwood route in 1978.
The "shoe shop" at 332 Flinder Street, Melbourne, was a mecca for a
certain element of tram enthusiasts in those days. They could not
cope with the transition from Ws to Zs and used to refer to the new
trams as "buses". There were some wild and wonderful "rumours" that
emanated from the shoe shop in those days.
The term "shoe shop rumour" is now part of Melbourne tramway folklore.
