Yesterday, the Minister for Transport announced the plan for new
public transport services into the Docklands area. The media release
is now on-line and relevent sections follow. Today the Herald-Sun
published a map which indicates the following tram extensions:
- the Harbour Esplanade line connecting Flinders extension to La
Trobe Street extension to be completed by early 2003
- Collins Street to be extended to Harbour Esplanade by early 2003.
At a later date, there will be a further extension across Harbour
Esplanade into the Victoria Harbour development on the north side of
the Yarra River
- Two further tram reservations for future services are planned for
Bourke Street West (West of Harbour Esplanande), and for Harbour
Esplanade, North of La Trobe Street. The latter reservation then
turns left into Docklands Drive (the extension of Dudley Street)
finishing just short of the Bolte Bridge.
Certainly some interesting developments to look forward to.

"Key elements of the Docklands Transport Plan prepared by consultants
Booz Allen & Hamilton include:
· A range of Tram Services with interlinking of services much like
the CBD grid. Trams will travel in a loop down the La Trobe Street
extension, along the Harbour Esplanade waterfront and up Flinders
Street. Trams will also travel along the Collins Street extension,
through the Batman's Hill precinct and down to Victoria Harbour. It
is expected that these services will be in operation by early next
year.
· Ferry and Water Taxi Services, with three stops planned to be in
service by early next year;
· Integrated access to the redeveloped Spencer Street Train Station.
Tram services will also link Flagstaff station with Docklands at
regular intervals.
· Two Bus Routes: Route 220 from Sunshine and Route 235-7 service
Docklands, running from Fishermen's Bend to the city via Lorimer
Street;
· Bicycle Trails and paths will link all parts of Docklands and
surrounding areas with the completion of the Docklands section of
the 'Capital Trail' by the end of the year. This will link the
northern most section of Docklands at Moonee Ponds Creek to the south
bank of the Yarra.
Local, regional and interstate train services from the redeveloped
Spencer Street Station to be completed in 2005 will complement
the new transport services.
"Already Docklands is serviced by a tram down La Trobe Street every 6
minutes in peak hour and less than ten minutes at other times," Mr
Batchelor said.
"By the end of this year, the tramway link from Flinders Street to
Harbour Esplanade will be constructed, so that by early 2003 tram
services will connect both Flinders Street and La Trobe Street to the
waterfront.
"Also by early next year, there will be a tram service taking
passengers down Collins Street to Docklands or back along Collins
Street to Spring Street.
"Two bus routes - Route 220 from the north and Routes 235 and 237
from the south are in place to serve the needs of the growing
Docklands.
"Nearly 60 percent of Melburnians live within 30 minutes travel time
of Docklands and so both reaching the precinct and moving within it
will be fast and efficient."
