COTMA, Ferny Grove etc (was YATM for Melbourne)

Yes, thank you Andrew. Another tram website to bookmark.

I note John Engleman's posting re his Ferny Grove visit experience.  It seems as though souvenir shop/visitor centre operation and the public interface is a point of difficulty for most tram museums. It is generally not a function which attracts the most suitable volunteers, and a disaster if left to the least suitable. Ideally it should be done as a commercial operation with competent paid staff, but I doubt if any of the museums would have the customer numbers to make that feasible (except maybe where the tramway is part of a larger professional museum/theme park operation like MOTAT, or where it is part of a municipally-supported operation like Wellington's Cable Car Museum).

The best shop operation I have encountered in a tram-only museum was St Kilda in 1997.  Hopefully it is still like that.

Maybe this is something that COTMA could encourage higher standards for. A bad experience at one museum will tend to reflect on all.

There is some information about this museum and others at the Council of Tramway Museums of Australasia website.

I hope this helps

Is there anyone on this list from Brisbane (not Adelaide!) who can give us
an update about Ferney Grove? I visited the site in early 2000 and peered
through the fence, but it was all shut up and didn't look much advanced from
the situation reported in old "Electric Traction" mags from the early 70s.
Is that unfair? Do they operate regularly? Have the plans for a decent
length of running track been abandoned?

Cheers,

I would strongly urge that any tram museum be
reachable by public transportation.  It also should
have at least one mile of track for operation.  A
static display does not give the same experience as
being on an operating tram.  During my visit to
Australia Loftus (Sydney), St Kilda (Adelaide) and
Bendigo satisfied those conditions and were great
experiences.  Ferney Grove (Adelaide), with only a few
hundred feet of track, left me with a desire for more.
This does not mean that I did not enjoy what they
had.
