I always thought that a good way to renumber the system would be to
denote the first number as the street in the city that the route ran
on. Then have the second number sequenced for the first being the
turn out from the main line. FOr routes that don't actually enter the
city, the the numbers would start in the 100's.
For example: Swanston St could be numbered 11-19. Route 11 would be
Sth Melb, Route 12 would be Toorak Rd and so on down the line.
TO take it further, odd starting numbers (10's, 30's 50's) would run
North/South, even would run East/West.
Numbers 1-9 would be used for special events.
Discussion anyone?
