First of all the Ws design was kept even in the
early 50s because that was the hardest design to convert to one man
operation.
When they did decide they were going to get rid of
conductors, they installed a low voltage electrical supply, then a huge, heavy
serve yourself ticket machine on the centre platform.
That made the car heel to starboard from the
weight. So they installed a port side counterweight.
All that garbage started to foul the brake
rigging.
Hence the new air-braking system which uses air
lines to valves I assume are on the trucks.
And, to offset any fears by idiots, they have also
installed magnetic track brakes.
All this on cars that formerly had air-brakes that
worked without problem for 70 years, albeit their braking had been improved by
going to Ferodo brake blocks over the old cast iron shoes.
There had also been an attempt to put in self
adjusters on the old air brake system to get rid of the pit men who adjusted the
brake linkages every night.
The whole thing is an odyssey of
idiocy.

conductor?
