-Thanks for the invite Murph but I'll be working hopefully a good
night to make money,I'll catch up in the New Year.Remember Melbourne
didn't spend any really serious money on public transport-from the
30s to the 70s,Depression,War then bloodymindedness by Bolte etc.It
was probably that attitude that kept the trams for us.Peter B.- In

Yep, money was tight but in that era, there were few motor cars and
money on
public transport would have been a high priority, I think.

Peter, Blythe and Bonnie will be up here New Years. We don't have
anything
in particular planned other than a fridge full of beer but feel
free to
wander up and doss here.

If you do, give us a call in case we nick out to one of the
neighbours'
places (you'd be welcome there, too, of course).

Happy New Year all.

-Murph,remember that it was Depression days and there was not a
lot of
money around I wouldn't mind betting that the predominant reason
for W5s
over Ys was simply how many cars could we get for a given amount of
money,re
one manning, employment was a really hot political issue, the
Australian
Tramway&Motor Omnibus Employees Association would have been
relatively
impotent given the huge number of unemployed,WGB,re VR cars 1942
was a bad
year for building trams,our Railway workshops,in particular,were
flat out
with war production,I suspect that they were built using whatever
was
easiest available.Peter B.-- In TramsDownUnder@y..., "IS Edit"

Good point, Peter.

I bet the Tramways Union would have been against them.

The real name of that union was the Australian Motor Omnibus and
Employees
Association.

I had a top secret security clearance in the US Army in the mid-
60s and
I
remember the DD-398 form "Application for Security Clearance"
had a list
of
what they termed "subversive organisations" on it. You had to
indicate
if
you had ever belonged to any of them. The only Australian
organisation
listed was the ATMO&EA because it was considered Maoist because
of their
Secretary Clarrie O'Shea.

Of course, a modern tramcar cost more to build (like it had
DOORS!); seems to me like a failure in imagination on the part
of M&MTB! They could have at least have run up some more
W2s for Collins and gone with Y derivatives for later builds.

Not as much fun to ride as a W on a nice day, but mighty
welcome on a cool, wet one! Maybe too easy to one-man??
