Bill,
Sorry to tear into your dogma but I've seen vintage trams in serious
operations on two major systems and Greg is quite right.
The first dictum of tramway operations is thou shalt be on time.
They'd rather have a tin can on rails now than a pleasure barge later.
Reliability and travel times are important factors here.
I've closely watched passengers in various kinds of vehicles and how they
interact with those vehicles for many years when I was an operator.
Melbourne passengers really liked those old trams and worked in with their
operating characteristics really well.
But those cars have been knackered by sliding doors which slowed them down
for acceleration and dwell time, by machines which take up space and
required the installation of low voltage electrical systems which buggered
the cars' simplicity, then by door interlocks which made it impossible to
get the old things going as soon as passengers were clear of the doors, then
by a stupid attempt to take a shortcut on brake adjustment. Those cars are
now knackered and they might as well go sink them off St Kilda Pier for an
artificial reef.
My personal feeling is that W class trams should be used during peak hours
and day time base period and be home around the time the sun goes down in
summer. They should not have sliding doors or at least those doors should
not have interlocks and they should be operated with connies during those
times.
The idiots responsible for the ticket machine debacle should all be fired,
the company that provided the machines sued, the machines dumped into Port
Philip Bay and new machines installed at important stops and tickets be made
much simpler so they can be sold almost anywhere.
The money from the damages paid by the company that made the ticket machines
should be used to pay connies.
We should get some Europeans in to establish a reasonable ticketing system
for trams, trains and buses in Melbourne.
And increase the fines for tram operating companies running late.
hahahahahahaha
I'm living in the bush, no longer give a stuff, and won't hold my breath
waiting for the wankers in Melbourne to get smart about the tram system. Too
bad, I used to like playing with the things. The passengers deserved better.
So did the City. Now they lie in the bed they made or allowed to be made.
The blind led by the lame. The Cain Government followed by Kennett. Both
ways, we were Jeffed.
Cheers,
Bob Murphy

What exact research method did you use to determine this Greg?
