Myki cards have a 5 year age limit. The card will need to be replaced.
Not sure why they picked 5 years. Sydney and Brisbane picked 9 years for
the SAME type of cards. I think Opal have pushed them out to 15 now.
London didn't program in an age limit on Oyster and last visit to London
my wife was using a 20 year old Oyster card. I used my phone and paid by
'contactless'.
The memory chips in the cards 'wear out', but the wear is use related
not age - the card vendor guarantees 5 years of intensive use - and I
think that's where the Myki people got the 5 years from.
It also does allow them to make format changes to the files on the cards
and know that they only have to support the old format 5 years before
they can remove that support from the system. If the cards never age
out, you have to support the older formats forever - which could be a
problem if some one manages to crack the security system used and starts
large scale issuing of fake cards that the system accepts. (Some one did
completely reverse engineer Oyster - the old Myfare Classic cards were
not terribly secure to start with, but Oyster forgery never became a
problem - or at least not enough of a problem for them to admit a
problem and withdraw support for the original format cards).
