Re: The last days of Ballarat's trams.

Nice shot there Mal. To add to the mix, here's some shots I took on the last two days of Ballarat's trams. I took colour slides on Saturday, 18 September, 1971, but burnt through film like it was going out of fashion. I bought a dodgy roll of slide film on the Saturday in Ballarat (forgotten the brand, and most of the shots were 'green/blueish', but one can't complain, as I got the last change-overs from single truckers to bogies with it) and after that a roll of Ilford black and white to get the last day coverage. They are:

03377--Car 40 crosses Car 34 at Grey Street loop, Sebastopol. Two local passengers are about to board No. 40. 18-9-1971.
03425--Inbound Car 34 enters Skipton Street at Rubicon Street, coming off the reserved track. 18-9-1971.
03472--On the last day, four bogie cars were held at the City loop as back-up trams, if the loading got heavy (most were put into service later). Here, Car 43 enters the City loop after reversing at Grenville Street. 19-9-1971.
03473--Back-up cars 34, 39, 37 and 43 stabled in the City loop. 19-9-1971.
03475--Car 40 inbound from Lydiard Street North gets held up at the Ballarat railway gates by an up goods train. Taken from the signal box, after a friendly signalman invited us photographers up to take happy snaps. 19-9-1971.
03476--The up goods train (behind T 393 and another T class) passes Car 40 at the Ballarat railway gates. 19-9-1971.
03477--Car 40 crosses the main railway to Adelaide, at Ballarat railway station. 19-9-1971.
03483--Car 40 at the City stop in Sturt Street prior to running off into the City loop. At left is driver Lou Walker talking to (I think) a retired tramway employee. Lou was the longest serving employee on the Ballarat trams at the time. 19-9-1971.
03485--Car 35 at right crosses inbound Car 42 at the Bell Street loop on the Sebastopol line. 19-9-1971.
03488--Car 39 (second last tram ever from Sebastopol) after arrival at Hospital Corner (Sturt Street and Drummond Street South), and running empty to the Depot. The SEC made all passengers get off the trams here, despite the fact the new bus services never ran to the Gardens at all. They insisted the line between Hospital Corner and the Depot was unavailable for passengers. Later when the last tram (Car 40) arrived here, there was a mad scramble in motor cars to the Depot to view the tram running into the shed. 19-9-1971.

Enjoy,

Cheers,
Andrew Cook (who was glad to catch the last days of Ballarat's trams).
