Evening all, seems like we've all got writers block, thought I'd better
do something about it.I've been thinking more about the trammies
language.Melbournes fishmarket hasn't been anywhere remotely near a
tramline for decades but it used to be on the corner of Flinders &
Spencer Streets jammed up against the railway viaduct and about 50
yards away in Spencer St,almost on the bridge, was a tramway crossover
or shunt. For all I know this is still known as the Fishmarket
shunt,it certainly was not all that long ago.A car would pull up at
Park & Clarendon on the down[down trip, away from the City],the Braid
{Line Inspector]would look at his watch and look at his headway
cards, the driver would look at his watch and say"How about turning me
at Albert Park" and he'd say "No,I know you are going bad but the
whole road is up the shit,go all the way down but come back from the
Fishmarket on the way back and wait for your time on the next trip at
Fitzroy St".Amazingly some bloke who had been a baby in Mauritius
when the Fishmarket was demolished would know exactly what he meant
and say,"Righto Vin,see you on the way back".Best Regards to
all.P.Bruce.
