Bruce, always bang-road in Melbourne,I am fairly sure it was a
Victorian Railways term as well, was it used in the other states?Paul,
I have been thinking along the same lines myself, always interesting
aren't they, argots that apply in particular industries, not just
words, but particular ways of speaking. Also fascinating, descriptive
words that survive long after the object they describe is gone,e.g.in
the western suburbs of Melb.,"Totty [Tottenham] Gates",Passengers in
my cab will often instruct me "go through Totty gates drive" when
couldn't possibly remember the railway gates that were once
there.There is another word,drive,meaning driver,is it peculiarly
Victorian? Occasionally applied to me when I was a trammie but often
now as a cabbie.Any chance of you putting up your list of words etc.
on TDU,I'd be most interested Paul. Why was the bang road at
Camberwell called the bang road?Regards to all,Peter B.--- In

Running "bang line" was a term introduced in Auckland by Aussie
traffic manager (ex-Adelaide) HH(Pop)Morgan I understand: in
Auckland
it meant run on the "wrong" track, i.e the right-hand line until
blockage, works etc on left-hand line, had been by-passed.

There are more than 400 entries already.

Seeking thoughts the more obscure ones that might have
fallen through the net.

The most recent one was "By"! (sorry we are not
talking about the trans-gender platform staff):

A real life example from a Camberwell marmalade shift
1974/1975:

"Conductor/Driver Nicholson, 817, with your bag, shunt
a big car off 10 road, put her on bang, then take 69
run at the Junction."

Does this need translation?
