Good Day

I'll start off by introducing myself - I've been a member of the Western
Springs Tramway, a Division of MOTAT for 17 years.

MOTAT commenced tramway passenger carriage in December 1967 on a line
constructed within the museum boundaries of about 400 meters. The
photographs Graham has posted are from the mid to late 1960's.

In 1980 the Western Springs Tramway was extended on a line parallel to Great
North Road only meters from the original Point Chevalier line. In 1981 this
was further extended around the corner into Motions Road below the Auckland
Zoo carpark. MOTAT's line is approximately 1.2 km in length outside of
MOTAT's grounds.

Now that MOTAT has regional funding (rating powers) via the MOTAT Act of
Parliament, there is a Strategic Planning process underway involving all
levels of the professional and volunteer museum and stakeholders, including
the territorial councils and visiting public. This also includes the long
proposed 1 km extension of the WST line from Auckland Zoo to the Keith Park
Memorial Airfield, MOTAT's second site encompassing the aviation, rail
collections and storage. Estimated NZ$1.5 million.

MOTAT's tram line is built in max concrete and operates 364 days of the year
with 5 restored passenger electric trams, 1 ex Sydney Steam Tram and an ex
Wellington Rail Grinder. WST has one full time employee, namely Ian Robinson
(famous tram modeller) the week day tram driver.
