RE: RE: Sydney South East Light Rail in Eddy Avenue - was: Overhead wires in George St

My attached image of the former three tram tracks in Eddy Avenue, taken on
14/09/1959, probably best shows where the new light rail would be located.
No light rail stop is proposed at this location, although there would be a
third track (as there was in the "olde" days) for light rail vehicles to
stand over.
The light rail would pass under the left arch, closest to Sydney Central
station. Behind the first supporting pillars are stairs and escalators
leading from the ground level to the main concourse level. Currently at
this location at street level are waiting rooms for passengers for long
distance buses.
For those who don't know Sydney, beyond the arches is Rawson Place, while in
the background, where the two single deck buses can be seen, is George
Street. The arches now support the existing light rail, and in year gone
by, the former Circular Quay to Railway Colonnade tram service via Pitt
Street, returning via Castlereagh Street.
The light rail would come up George Street from the Quay and turn into
Rawson Place which would be closed to general road traffic, becoming instead
the light rail and bus interchange. No light rail stop is shown for Eddy
Avenue. Although the Rawson Avenue interchange would be only metres from
Central Station, it does involve a ground level crossing of the extremely
busy Pitt Street without any shelter from adverse weather conditions.
It would seem from the plans currently on display, suburban train passengers
would be encouraged to exit via the Devonshire Street end of Central
Station, to join the light rail at the stop provided near the Dental
Hospital. Again, no covered walkway in proposed from the station exit to
the light rail platforms.
