I actually think there are some apologies due to Andrew Cox. It is
not his fault that complainants are unable to (1) download the
Citidas files or (2) play them.
As pointed out in my earlier note on this subject it is in fact
simple to do both - I won't repeat myself.
But what concerns me most is (a) the tone of the "please desist"
instruction and (b)the griping which indicates this is somehow Andrew
Cox's fault. He quite rightly has said he won't be bothered posting
any more files.
I have rarely seen this sort of things on other groups and it is
regretable here. If it keeps up no one will post anything and then
where will we be.
May I suggest that keeping our software up to date (and our knowledge
of it) is our own personal responsibility, NOT (except for viruses)
the posters!
Don't shoot the messenger!

Okay, gang!

Yes, I do owe Andrew Cox an apology for the brusque and harsh language I
used earlier. I was expressing my personal frustration at initially being
unable to view the clips, and it was not directed at him specifically, but
rather that it was an unusual format which we at TramsDownUnder (and the
other groups where I am listowner) do not normally encounter. Following his
instructions, I have successfully downloaded the three clips, and they are
cute (if short!) LOL. So I'm sorry, Andrew, for being huffy and coming
across like an ogre. I really am not!

What I have done is to put the URL for the Windows version of the clips in
the "Bookmarks" section of the group. I'm also indicating how one can
download the Windows Media Player application, regardless of whether you
have the Windows or Mac OS, in the Bookmarks description. Andrew was kind
enough to list them in his message #639. I'm repeating the URLs in this
message. The application takes up about 4.5 MB, and for Macs, you need OS
8.5 or later; different versions for the various Windows OS.

The Files URL:
http://members.optushome.com.au/tramways/files/
The URL for downloading the application:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/en/download/default.asp
There are separate versions for Windows 98/Windows 2000/Windows ME; Mac 8.5;
or Windows 95/Windows NT 4; plus other versions for other platforms.

So if you wish to view the clips, please follow this procedure. Thanks.

That said, THIS IS THE FILES, PHOTOS AND ATTACHMENTS POLICY for all of my
groups, including TramsDownUnder, and has been since Day One.

PICTURE FILES: JPEG (.jpg) picture format only! Everyone with an
image-editing program can open a JPEG (.jpg), but not everybody can open a
BMP, TIFF, or Octet/stream format. If you have a doubt whether an image is
a true JPEG, try saving it. A pop-up menu will open, and if the line "Save
as:" reads anything other than JPEG, go down the list until you get to JPEG,
then release the mouse button. Complete the prompts, and voilà! Your
picture is ready to be attached to a TramsDownUnder message! Also, please,
only one JPEG per message.
TEXT FILES: Many of us don't have MS Word, or have only one type of
word processing application on our PCs or Macs. So I'm asking that if you
are forwarding a text file to the group, copy the text of whatever it is you
wish to send to the group, go to the group web site, open "Files", then
click on "Create Text File". Then paste in what you just copied in the
space provided. This way, everybody can read it. If you can't copy and
paste the text, indicate the URL where listmembers can view it in a message
to the group.
PHOTOS: Again, only JPEG (.jpg) picture format only! All other formats
will be removed by the listowner (me). This is standard procedure now on
many groups, and it is on mine.
VIDEOS--QuickTime, RealPlayer, Windows Media Player movies, clips and
other action files: Please indicate the URL for the site where these can be
viewed. PLEASE DO NOT UPLOAD THESE FILES TO THE GROUP without my expressed
written permission.

I have these rules for two reasons--SIMPLICITY and EASE OF ACCESS.

If you have a question about a particular file you want the group to know
about, please ask me, the listowner (aka Milantram) at
<[email protected]> first to determine the best method of informing the
group. That way we can avoid problems and everyone on the group will at
least be informed that there is something out there you wish to share with
the other listmembers. If it doesn't fall into one of the categories listed
above, tell the group how the item can be viewed.

As for upgrading one's computer, we all try in our own way. It was
fortunate that Microsoft's Windows Media Player was available at no charge.
(I, personally, refuse to shell out any money to fatten Bill Gates's
exchequer! I have Outlook Express and IE, both of which were bundled with
my iMac.) But most of us have tight budgets and can't go out and get MS
Word or Office or some other application on a whim, because we do just fine
with what we've got, and some of us may have computers with operating
systems which date back to the Stone Age (Windows 95, Mac 7.1, etc.) and
can't just go out and get the latest, coolest and fastest. Some of us may
not be able to get everything. But that still doesn't detract from their
enjoyment of the hobby.

So again, I'm sorry, Andrew, for my initial outburst. Please let the group
know when more of these clips are available for viewing. And the rest of
you--I want you to keep posting, and submitting pictures (1 to a message, of
course).

Milantram (Peter Ehrlich)
listowner
