The only other electrical method that worked long term is the centre
conduit system as previously used in London, Washington, New York (all
for cosmetic reasons associated with their status as real as political
and/or financial capitals) and a few other places. It was a very
expensive to build and due to a number of technical issues requires a
much large amount of maintenance than any trolley wire system. All
cities that had any extensive amount of centre conduit electrification
switched to trolley wire in the outer parts of long routes because of
the much lower cost.
Diesel power trams have been used at various times in Japan and
Germany, though I think there are none in operation anywhere at
present.
Battery power has also been used at various time, but even with modern
battery technology is still regareded as an "experimental" technology.
