yes Invercargill boasted "the most southerly tramway terminus in the
world". Was shown in a postcard - of which I may have a copy
somewhere. Timaru - between Chch and Dunedin - nearly had an electric
tramway.

There were also two "nearlys" in the North Island - Palmerston North
and Auckland's North Shore. The latter operated as a steam tramway
from 1910 to 1927 (closed) but was designed as an electric system.

Otherwise the list was Auckland, Gisborne(Edison battery), Napier
(destroyed in earthquake), New Plymouth, Wanganui (perhaps the most
unlikely!) and Wellington - then Christchurch, Dunedin and
Invercargill.

Cable in Wellington and Dunedin (and nearly in Auckland).

Also, I'm not too good at NZ geography. Is New Plymouth on the

North.

If not, were there any tramway systems on the South Island?

From memory... Christchurch (was, and now is again), Dunedin (where
the cable car pull curve was invented) and Ivercargill (not quite
the
end of the earth, but you can see it from there <grin>).

Cheers,

Bill
