. . . so the BA&P had been running at up to 3000V. The
quality of the insulation on the BA&P equipment was such that
nothing
failed!

It is said that in later years, the Milwaukee Road line voltage was
increased to 3300 without official approval by adjusting the
dynamos and substations and "rezeroing" the line voltage
meters to read 3000 @ 3300. Loco operation was said to be
more spritely. (After some time, this was made official.)

Of course, this was only a 10% increase and applied to
equipment that was over-designed in the first place. I
understand that line voltage surges are not uncommon -
particularly where regenerative braking is employed, as on the
Milwaukee - so this could have been expected to be within safety
limits. On the other hand, many of the locos were 50 years old at
the time!
