No, Car 253 is of standard 'coachwork on chassis' construction. 253's
('Queen Mary') main claim to fame is that, when built, it was an
experimental car fitted with regenerative control. It had special Met
Vickers controllers and compound-wound (series/shunt) MV motors. (I
would be most interested to know of ANY other systems in which this MV
equipment was installed.) Regretably this was taken out of 253 after
the war - replaced with K6's + MV109's ; however the Farmers Free
(1938)trolleybuses (of which we have 2 - all four were saved) do have
essentially the same equipment.
Our Semi-steel car is no.203, one of 36 cars built (locally). The
design was abandoned from car 206 on. Although the next 40 cars to
246 looked superficially similar ('deco' body styling) they and the
later streamliners were wood on steel chassis.
I have not heard that Wellington plan to import a Z and I think it
unlikely, given the number of Wellington cars they have to restore,
and their 4' gauge. Also I have no idea what plans are in
Christchurch - either the city line or Ferrymead. Personal estimate
is a low probability however.

Is the semi steel car Auckland no 253? Is the Wellington group
try and obtain a Z class?
