I have received an inquiry from the Seattle Times with respect to an
allegation that the Sydney monorail is either being closed, or that there
is mounting pressure to abandon it. These allegations are contained in a
letter to the Seattle Times, copied below.
Can you provide reliable information regarding this rumor? Also, any
specific person(s) for the reporter to contact?
The Seattle Times reporter, who contacted me, is working on a short
deadline for a possible story on this issue.

Last winter, I had a wonderful visit to Seattle, travelling around the
city seeing all of your beautiful and great places. Great market, great
people, great views. Now I hear there is a plan to build a monorail? As
a resident of Sydney, Australia, I suggest most emphatically that you
really do not do this.
Our "Famous Sydney Monorail" is a blight. It's a tourist toy used
principally to move tourists from the city to and from Darling Harbour,
a tourist attraction. It is not much used by locals and many would
happily see it removed - including the current mayor and his planning
office. Only they don't have the money.
It is not a viable transit alternative and anyone who wants to get
anywhere uses other transit - light rail or buses.
If you really want a monorail, take ours. Please! We don't want it!
