Went for another quick look at the progress of the Docklands tramto
works today.
The connecting link between Flinders St and Docklands Esplanade is
nearly finished. All rails are laid and concreted in. Noticed three
strange things though:
1) There is construction right up to the temporary crossover at
Flinders St extension. Looks like this may be removed very soon,
without even being used (except for the useless shuttle someone
mentioned a few weeks ago).
2) The tracks off the end of the Collins St bridge will eventually
(soon?) cross the new connecting link, yet no crossing was
installed. Currently the Collins St. tracks finish 50m or so from
the new link. Wouldn't it have made sense to at least extend them
cross, rather than having to dig it all up again soon to put thethere
crossing in?
3) Where the new link joins the tracks at Docklands Esplanade,
is a ludicrously sharp S-bend. In fact so sharp that they've had towanted.
dig up a 20m length of the new track that has lain unused for the
last 2 years or so to connect it up. What a waste of money. This
must be the first bit of track pulled up before it ever saw regular
services.
And why does the bend have to be so sharp? It's all open wasteland
at the moment; they could have put the tracks where ever they
