An interesting point, Don. The tracks in Bunny St were installed for the
extra tram traffic expected for the 1939-40 Centennial Exhibition. I believe
in later years they were mainly used for school trams to take kids from the
train to the schools near the Basin Reserve, and for off-peak storage.
AFAIK, no scheduled services used these terminal tracks.

The paving in this area has recently been reconstructed to be a bit more
pedestrian-friendly, and the trees are bigger, but the basic arrangement of
the area remains much the same as the photo. Work is about to start on a
very large hotel/retail complex on the site to the extreme right of the
photo.

Cheers,

Brent Efford

Two trams sit in Bunny Street in front of Wellington's Railway Station, with
tracks turning in front of us into Featherston Street.

The site of the old Lambton station was to our left, down the side of the
new
building.

Now if you arrived in a city for the first time, especially if you had seen
a
picture like this, you'd expect to come out to this plaza to catch transport
uptown, right? At least, that's what I did in 1960: marched out the front
door,
ignoring the "Lambton Quay" signs, to be greeted by . . . nothing. The new
station may have had a new orientation, but public transport clung to the
the
old pattern and used what had now become the side entrance.

The liner sitting at Glasgow Wharf appears to be the Dominion Monarch.
