Re Message 2 from "Citadis" concerning Railfan Shop
manager:
To me as a rather uneddicated geriatric this is what
the moderators call "Flaming" in the rules of the
group.
Correct me if I am wrong please.
When I was young "flaming" referred to something
flaming good or flaming bad meaning really good or
really bad.
Slang which seems to have disappeared from the
language.
To get to the point, I have heard stories about him
from the time he ran his stamp shop in Cookson St.
Camberwell. I am not mentioning names because to me
the laws of libel come into this.
I am sure anyone using the shop has stories to tell,
but using this site will do no good.
A formal letter to ARE board signed and setting out
your problems wiht the manager to me would be more
likely to achieve something.
He was appointed several years ago to "turn round" a
shop losing money and at least cover expenses. A
perusal of ARE annual reports would confirm that to me
he has succeeded in stopping the losses and at least
covering expenses.
I let the welcomes pass but sometimes wince when
someone he has not seen in a long time or ever comes
in.
However, My magazines are kept for me regularly each
month that I have asked to be kept for me, I can get
the l0% discount on books being an ARE member and am
satisfied, warts and all that the shop and its manager
provide a good service.
Bear in mind the old saying,
"Everyone in this world is peculiar except thee and me
and even thee is a bit strange"
Submitted for what it is worth!!!!!!

PS I once asked the lad porter how he puts up with it
all.
Answer - "I am paid to.....

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the update on the old Coburg depot,
interesting depot
shame it's not put some good use.

Yes, I hate going into the railfan shop, the manager
is not
interested in what the clintel wants, he just
follows people around
the shop saying "how are you" at the top of his
voice and woe betide
you if you ignore him, he is a bloody embarrasment
when interstae or
overseas people come in and he asks them all sorts
of personal
questions, I've seen people just turn around and
walk out, he is rude
and interfering and I avoid the place like the
plague, I once got a
number of books and mags through there and now get
none, it's about
time the ARE did something about him, the last time
I was in there
was in fact, the LAST TIME.

Hi,

I'm sure someone will fill in the gaps but, here
goes, some years
ago, 3801 was coming home from a trip in, I believe
the Blue
mountains, it was pulling a rake made of wooden
cars, the train had
stopped or stalled and had been dropping sand for
traction. An
interurban following rammed the back of the train
killing several,
the coroner blamed the sand on the track,
interfering with the
signalling and this was used to remove steam
specials for a number of
years. Of course, everybody conventiently forgot
that deisel locos
also use sand for traction!! That is why NSW locos
now have blowers
in front of lead wheels to blow sand off track.

Cheers
citadis
