Bill Bolton did some research and sent me the following privately:

"The building at 2 Chalmers St was build in 1937 and opened in 1938, however,
it was extended by a further few floors in 1947. Given that and apparent
colours scheme on the double decker buses (which had settled on the what was
pretty much the standard post-war green and cream with black lining bands from
late 1946, together with the lack of ads on the bus sides, it seems a likely
bet that the photo from circa late 1947."

Which fits with the observation that Frank Hurley probably wouldn't have used a
1939 picture in a 1948 publication. Somebody else, maybe, but Hurley was at
pains to keep his books au courant.

If anybody else wants to scan from an earlier edition of the Australia book the
field is open. I have the 1961 edition. No Adelaide trams, just a single
trolleybus in Rundle St. which I'll be posting down the road along with a few
tramway pics from the "Displaying Australia and New Guinea" book. I'm trying to
pace myself, to avoid hogging bandwidth and running out of material too
quickly.
