I grew up in Mosman so the North Sydney trams were "my" trams. I
still remember clearly the moment my father passed on the devastating
news that the trams were going to stop running. I must have been
about 6 or so at the time and had to endure the following couple of
years as the North Sydney system was truncated prior to complete
abandonment. I remember being amazed at how quickly the Mosman Wharf
line junction frogs were welded "through" for the Balmoral and Athol
services. It only took day or so after the last tram ran to the
Wharf.

It was a great adventure to travel to town on the tram, rattling
across the bridge high above the harbour, the brief stop at Argyle St
then and then plunging into the darkness of the Wynyard tunnels.
Strangely, my only direct recollections of the tunnels all involve
corridor cars, though I clearly remember riding O Class and K class
toast racks on other parts of the North Sydney system. The noise on
the tram platforms when an electric train pulled in on the adjoining
railway platform was deafening. The arrival or departure of trams was
virtually silent in comparison to the trains.

Even after the North Sydney trams quit, my mother would take me on
tram rides on the exotic P class cars to Clovelly and after that line
shut down, on Rs and R1s to La Perouse while my father was watching
football at the Sydney Cricket ground.

Cheers,

Bill
