I'm sure someone will fill in the gaps but, here goes, some yearsago, 3801 was coming home from a trip in, I believe the Blue
mountains, it was pulling a rake made of wooden cars, the train had
stopped or stalled and had been dropping sand for traction. An
interurban following rammed the back of the train killing several,
the coroner blamed the sand on the track, interfering with the
signalling and this was used to remove steam specials for a number of
years. Of course, everybody conventiently forgot that deisel locos
also use sand for traction!! That is why NSW locos now have blowers
in front of lead wheels to blow sand off track.

Excuse the correction, but the incident occurred on Cowan bank, on the north main line to Newcastle.
