NZ: National Geographic pictures - 1 of 2

First of two pictures from the National Geographic Magazine.

It is from a mid-1960s article entitled "New Zealand, Gift of the Sea" and
looks up Queen Street in Auckland during the Christmas season. ATB 112 sports
the red belt rail and striped poles proclaiming the Queen Street service.
Indeed, the inscription on the belt rail reads "Queen St - Karangahape Rd"
while the placard in the window says "Via Greys Ave."

On the other side of the road and just beyond the bend at Victoria St. are two
sister trolleys in the same service.

Distances are deceptive in this telephoto, but it would appear that the wires
we see in the foregroud are of the dual overhead in Customs St. Note that the
Queen Street wires don't turn here: not only did the Queen Street short
workings continue a block north to Galway Street to loop for the return
journey, but Railway Station trips likewise took the same roundabout route to
avoid a right turn at this busy intersection. (Kodachrome by Robert B Goodman)

Quality of photo reproduction in magazines was just a trifle short of today's
standards. Oh, to be able to see the originals.
