Tram Conductors

It was interesting to hear Jon Faine on ABC Melbourne radio this past week to mention Frenchy, the Malvern conductor. Mr Faine got it almost correct except he said that he was tall.  He was not. But the other details were correct.  He used to blow bubbles from a pipe, he used to do biblical reading from his conductor's journal, he used to roll his cap down his arm, he did have fake spiders to place in peoples change and more.  He is still alive and well and does not look much different and still travels on trams.  The Malvern 'Depot Master', Thalberg, hated him. But that never cramped Frenchy.  His name was something like Liebfrawein (yes I know that is such a seventies drink).
