Re: Digest Number 389

I think it was 30 years ago probably 1971 about the time the Ballarat
trams closed. I would have to check my slides. I remember doing the
0500 shift at 3AW and walking up to Swanston Street on the last day
of the old numbers to get some photos during my 0900 break. It was a
Saturday morning and I remember taking a shot of a W2 on the 2A to
South Melbourne Beach. There was also a 4D and a 7!
More memories...

now when several other route nos. were reallocated and
A B D E suffixes such as 2A, 4D etc. etc. were
abolished. 4D became 3 9A became 9. Most of the others
were rarely used by that time apart from those two.
Route 72 used to be Batman Avenue-Riversdale but was
very rarely ever used at the best of times. Crossover
still there however near Wattle Valley Rd. in
Riversdale Road.
2A became 2 but subsequently disappeared and now
incorporated into 1. 6B Malvern Town Hall was another
now un numbered as used for Malvernm Depot ex High St.
Trust this of interest, John Fitzsimons

I kind of get the impression No 7 route is now Rt
72, and that shown in the photo was the Camberwell
terminus. Correct?

Fitzsimons
Many moons ago when I first escaped from New
Zealand, I passed through Melbourne in December 1963
on way to seek my fortune and happiness on a working
holiday in Great Britain.
The good ship "Gallileo Gallalei" , a new ship of
the Lloyd Triestino line, dropped me at Station Pier
from where I did a lightning day of tram gunzelling
and riding around the City.
When checking pictures last night, I see that at
some stage that day I actually rode on a No 7
tram.............No 415.

Yes A.B. that is correct.
Back in the days, the route was all route 7 with
suffixes to show the
short workings....7a 7b 7c etc.
I hope J.F. or someone will verify this and
elaborate.

It's not very often that the central city has the
main
tram tracks relayed.
Here is the scene in Swanston St last night at about
5pm.
Swanston St from LaTrobe to Victoria is being relaid
-
except for the points at Franklin St.
