Re transport to sports days....
I'll show my age when I say I can remember while being
at Deepdene SS l947-52 sports day was at Hawthorn
Football Ground as it was in Glenferrie Rd.
Trams came from Camberwell Depot to pick up the
multitude waiting at Whitehorse-Burke Rd. corner.
Right turn from burke Rd. into Whitehorse Rd. Proceed
to route 44 crossover at Times Theatre to shunt.
Return, pick up kids at Burke Rd. Along Cotham Rd to
Kew PO, shunt, return to Glenferrie Rd, right turn to
Glenferrie crossver, unload kids, trams to wherever to
get back to Camberwell Depot.
By secondary school we went to Olympic Park annually,
trams from Kew Depot this time from Deepdene Park to
Victoria-Church St. corner, reverse then wrong road
round the then single curve into Church St. Right turn
Church St-Swan St then to Olympic Park. At that time
(mid 50's) Swan-Church was a half grand union with
double curves to/from south Church to west Swan St.
and east Swan St. to north Church St. Needless to say
a few trolley poles went the wrong way but enabled
being able to ride round rarely used curves now long
gone, especially Burke Rd. north to east Whitehorse
Rd. and vv.
Can remember also occasionally being able to ride on a
Route 7 tram which left from the "siding" at the
terminus, presumably a block car. Did not see it leave
from there very often as of course it involoved a
shunt ala Dudley St. siding still extant today.
Also the outer circle had not very long gone at that
time and Deepdene yard was still very obvious with the
road motor depot and hump at Whitehorse Rd. level
crossing ala Riversdale Rd. today which was there for
years until the lines were relaid about l960. Signal
cable conduits were still beside where the tracks were
but the line had been pulled up by the time I started
going to DeepdeneSS But can remember the road motors
carrying standing loads of school kids along the route
to/from East Camberwell.
This was long before the clock lights were put in at
Burke-Whitehorse Rd. corner and the Mont Park bus used
to do a U turn int eh middle of the intersection.
Still the yellow livery as more or less now but of
course normal control Federals and such like.
Them's were the days.
Now of course still the same but completely different
ways of doing things.
Trust these memories of interest.

I found another pic - this time taken on an ARE tour
on 12/9/1964 when 639 was heading the train.

My notes just say "between Bylands and Kilmore" but
it
looks to me like the North end of the (present) TMSV
track.

Can anyone confirm?

The
people look like they are frightened and running for
their lives; I
expect Eldon was yelling and screaming at them to
get back on the
train. He was a cruel man.
It was interesting to see the train of round roof W
cars.
Unfortunately I missed the Heathcote line because I
worked in the
Model Dockyard on Saturday mornings from 1965 to
1969 and the owner,
Peter Duckett, has a strict policy of not letting
casual staff have
days off to go on train trips.

Bill,

The tour train was the A.R.H.S.Heathcote
tour,1-7-66.The loco was
K191<now at Mooroduc>.The photographer is standing
where no 2 shed
at
Bylands is now
located.

Paul,
>On
the A.R.E. Heathcote the photo stop was at Hume
Highway level xing at Kilmore. On both tours
Hogaphone was really in his element humiliating
photographers with his loud hailer. This is the
reason he was refused membership of the T.M.S.V.As
the late Bob Prentice told me ,they did not want
"ANY MORE ORGANIZERS".
