As clearly short running trams (which used to terminate at Balwyn) would
now terminate at Mont Albert.

The risk of confusing passengers who would know the current system would probably mitigate against that idea. I suspect that if there is renumbering, Box Hill to City would probably become 41, much like the 88 became 87 at Latrobe Uni (and Boldrewood Pde?), then 86 when it extended to Bundoora.

Then again, given the current privatised situation, I daresay it is equally likely 42 would refer to Box Hill to City trams as well as Mont Albert...
