Australian and NZ cities currently operating trams, lrvs, museumsand/or
heritage lines. Thanks again. As for cities running LRV's, museums etc. Let's work our way around
...
That oughta keep you guys out of mischief for a while [lol] ;-)
from the top;
Queensland, No LRT (excellent heavy rail, suburban and country,
probably the most progressive in OZ) Tram Museum at Ferny Grove with
examples of all Brisbane trams, operating on short track, to be
extended.
NSW. Sydney LRT line from Railway Sq to Lillyfield over small stretch
of street track, rest on former frieght line. Huge suburban system
with beautifull interurban lines (not in the form of the North Shore
or PE unfortunately!!) Premier Australian tramway museum, has large
collection of mostly restored operating cars and a sizeable
international fleet place example form every state. Long line, will
expand even further, has just had a huge blue stone building re-
errected on site for true tram street.
Vic., Melbourne Third largest tramway system in the world, huge
suburban rail network. Museums at Bylands and Haddon plus Tourist
line/museums in Ballarat and Bendigo also laterly, a Cable car line
(albeit gas powered) in the town of Portland useing genuine and
replica Cable sets from the former Melbourne Cable netwrk (closed
1940).
Tas. Hobart no LRT or suburban rail service, static transport museum
with some trams and trolley buses. plans for tourist line on water
front. Launceston, as for Hobart, tramway museum, one beautifully
retored double truck car with plans to run.
South Australia. Adelaide, Glenelg suburban tram line (after style of
Red Arrow) some suburban rail lines but deisel rail car run.
Excellent museum with extensive collection of Adelaide cars mostly
retored and a long run.
Western Australia. Pert, no LRT excellent suburban electric rail
network expanding. Excellent tramway museum with some local cars (one
restored and running more under way) and a number of Melbourne cars,
long line and it works as two routes.
NZ, No LRT anywhere and despite various schemes, unlikely in our
lifetimes. Has excellent museum where miracles have been created by
such a small population, three museums, Wellington,Auckland and
Christchurch, the latter in the form of a village with shops,
streets, real tramway museum, like Sydney. Tourist tramway in
Christchurch as well. Extensive trolley bus network (last in
Australasia) in Wellington. Interesting trolley bus museum in Foxton
where the town has let the museum string trolley wire over the
streets and the buses.
Well that's about it, I'm sure I have forgotten something but it'll
have to do.
Cheers
Greg
