Re: William Street shunt

I think I am right in this. The Domain Interchange was a
Bicentennial funded project, so it was 1988, and that was when the
trough trams from Malvern and Glenhuntly stopped running. So no more
38 (8), 36 (6), 35 (5), 32 (72, except 32 only went to Camberwell
Junction and then turned into Riversdale Rd and then Glenferrie to
get back to Malvern), 37 (67) and 65, which I think went via
Balacalva Rd, (3) and then turned into Hawthorn Rd (64). I don't
think the 16, it was 15 back then, was ever involved.

Btw, the William St shunt used to work very well, but there was an
inspector there to sort it out.

Andrew.

Hi Brent,

William Street shunt was used to terminate/start certain peak hour
only runs
that ran along routes 8, 72, 6, 5, 64, 67 and 16(?) and diverted
via Park
Street (Domain I/C). From memory these services finished in the mid-
late
1980s.

It was similiar to the peak hour runs that ran via LaTrobe Street
on the 42
and 48 and 86 (the latter finishing in the early 90s). I can
remember as a
uni student at RMIT in lectures watching venerable (but trusty) W2
class
cars running via LaTrobe Street to Bundoora in the peak!

Come to think of it I always used to wait at the Swanston Street
stop for
any W2 heading outbound to catch on the 'long way home' to Box Hill
via ???
and ??? Memories of coasting down Commercial Road in a W2 heading to
Camberwell on a pleasant summer's evening after class. In the
twilight years
of the Harris sets I was quite happy to wait for an hour at Museum
for a run
home in a Harris. The ultimate trip home to Box Hill was via
Werribee on a
Harris!

Fond memories.
