THE State Government has privatised the management of the historic Preston tram workshops.
Global transport giant Alstom will retain the
site's 35 jobs when it takes over in August.
The company will employ more workers if it wins
further construction and maintenance contracts. The workshops now have deals
with M>Tram and Yarra Trams, including the fit-out of the new Citadis and
Combino vehicles.
Preston is also refurbishing the troubled W-class
fleet after brake problems.
Alstom has a four-year contract to manage the
workshops with an option to extend until 2011. It also recently won a Government
contract to upgrade the Ballarat and Geelong routes for the fast rail
project.
The Government decided to call tenders for the
Preston management contract after an independent review last year.
