ARTIST Rone is taking inspiration from the ticking heart of post-WWII Melbourne for a nostalgic installation opening in the Flinders St station ballroom next month.
His installation, Time, will bring a lost era to life in 12 rooms that recreate the days of machine rooms, typing pools, public libraries, school houses and entertainment parlours.
Rone, born Tyrone Wright, says each installation evokes stories from the past "slightly based on the truth, with a bit of fiction in there as well.
"I'm not letting the truth get in the way of a good tale." he says.
His clock room is inspired by those at the front entrance to Flinders St Station, which he has envisaged as a storage room, and low key space to hang out.
As with most of his work, Rone's haunting signature female portraits hover ghostlike above each scene.
Rone says the images symbolise beauty amid the decay.
Meanwhile, the time-honoured restrictions of the heritage-listed ballroom have made Rone's latest work challenging.
"Everything we need to get into the building needs to fit through an 80cm door on an active station platform," he said. "We can't put new anchors into the wall, and we have to report any new markings and scratches. It's been hugely difficult."
Time opens on October 28.

* Stations a disgrace. I’m sure that I’m not the only one to notice, but taking the train into central Melbourne for a show the other night I was horrified at how old, dirty and dowdy the city's rail stations now look.
The trains were wonderful, but the stations had grease, dust, grime everywhere. And broken or worn-out fixtures, dull painted walls and ceilings with edges all worn.
Flinders St and Parliament were terrible, and just looked so old and unloved. Do we not have an ongoing maintenance program to keep our stations looking good?
If I was an international tourist, I'd be wondering about the safety of the system I was about to ride on, it looks thatbad.
Come on, whoever is responsible for this — get the job done. We should be feeling proud to use our public transport network, not apologetic to others for the state it is in. Let’s get this fixed, and quickly.

Police have identified the driver of a truck who was killed after his vehicle “lost control” near Ballarat, plunging onto railway tracks.
Emergency services were rushed to the Western Highway, near the Midland Highway overpass, in Wendouree after reports a B-double truck had crashed about 3.45am.
He had reportedly lost control of the vehicle, veering off the road and into a ditch before coming to a stop on the Ballarat Maryborough railway line.
The driver, a 28-year-old man from Truganina, died at the scene.
The Western Fwy was closed for several hours on Thursday as investigators poured over the scene and a crane was brought in to remove the truck.
A truck driver has died after veering off a highway in northwest Victoria and crashing onto a nearby railway line overnight.
Both the Midland Hwy and the Western Fwy west-bound have since reopened to traffic, while Melbourne-bound lanes remain closed as investigations continue.
A VLine spokesman said Marybrough to Southern Cross services was adjusted to originate from Ballarat while the section of track was closed.
“Passengers travelling between Maryborough and Ballarat can board a replacement coach to complete their journey,” he said.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal crash and will prepare a report for the Coroner.
Anyone who witnessed the crash, or with dashcam is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

* Decentralising city. FRANCIS Galbally claims that the city council is “ruining” Melbourne by way of having too many bike lanes in the CBD.
But city planners are redesigning Melbourne away from travelling by car to travelling by public transport.
And this is also ending the centralisation policies of the past, when all roads and almost all public transport led to the CBD.
The Suburban Rail Loop will be built to further end the centralisation. Retailing and restaurants and main entertainment and offices will be concentrated in the suburbs.
This is modern-day progress in new major business centres. How many more articles do we have to read about the city council's bike lanes “destroying” the CBD?
* YOU know you're getting old (or looking old) when people leap out of their seat on the train for you.
