As a resident of San Francisco, I often describe Oz (or M'bourne,
at least) as an "alternative universe" of Central/Bay Area
California, what with the Eucalyptus trees, the Safeways and the
Holiday Inns that I saw there in the late '80s. Probably more so
today, if Canada is any guide.

I love some of the Aussie variations on standard California
themes, such as "ranch" houses (appearing to be transplanted
directly from innumerable '50s US housing tracts) with cast iron
gingerbread and "tin" roofs.
