I had a call from Jeffrey Bounds last night who said the flyover was
built in 1959-1960. The tram track aligment across the flyover is
slightly south of the old ground level alignment. I believe my tram
trip across the construction may have been in the May 1960 school
holidays. There was a "shoo fly" on a temporary fylover while the
current tracks were constructed.
Were any readers around during this period?
There is a good photo, taken in December 1959, of the temporary
flyover on page 37 of "Trams and Streetscapes: Metropolitan Melbourne
1950s-1960s"

Could someone post a picture of the area with the flyover? I can't

The demolition of the Flinders Street flyover will open up the

of the Waterside Hotel and watch the trams go by!
I remember my mother taking me for a tram ride over the newly
constructed flyover, probably during the school holidays in 1960.
That would have been on a "trip to town" that was a school holiday
treat for the baby boomers. I can't recall the area before the
flyover was constructed.
