Yes Michael I was born and bred in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.
Lived there all my life except for my time in Sydney from 1972 to
1974. Grew up in the Great Grey Eastern Suburbs dry area - a monument
to the temperance movement of the 1920s. Good people protected from
the evils of the demon drink!

PS: One for our US readers; do any trams in the US travel through
any "dry" areas like ours [routes 48, 42/109, 70, 72 and 75] do in
the former municipalities of Camberwell and Box Hill (now parts of
Boroondara and Whitehorse)? I think the down track of route 72 is in
a "wet" area (former cities of Hawthorn and Kew) and the up track is
in a "dry" area (former City of Camberwell).

Paul, I thought you already lived here...8^)

If the areas are the same as when we went on holidays to the US in
1986, I doubt that Melbourne has anything that comes too close to
being as grotty and squalid as much of LA seems to be. Some would
argue the western suburbs (especially around Footscray) are probably
a bit iffy, but I can't say that anybody I've known from the west
have been anything other than normal people.

I suppose Sydney's west around Cabramatta, Liverpool and Bankstown
would probably be areas to avoid but even then the perceived dangers
vary from those who don't live around the area saying how dangerous
it is, whilst a young female I used to work with had absolutely no
qualms about catching PT home late at night through the area,
changing to a bus at Liverpool and walking 15 minutes or so from the
bus stop.
