How close does the tourist line go to Gracelands? I would love to go
to Memphis and ride to Elvis Presley's home on a W2!
I think one of the Memphis cars in W2 369; I remember riding it from
Mont Albert to the City on one of my very first tram riding
expeditions on my own in the late 1950s. My parents drove me to the
Mont Albert terminus. I rode W2 369 to Spencer Street. Caught a train
to Flinders Street. I remember purchasing a 3d (threepence) child
single to Flinders Street and then taking the tram to the 70 terminus
at Wattle Park where my parents picked me up. My family home at
Surrey Hills was about one-third the straight line distance between
the Mont Albert and Wattle Park tram termini.
The tram fares were 9d (ninepence) each. So the afternoon's riding
cost me 1s 9d (18c in today's money!).
It also started my "fetish" of only considering tram route "done"
when it is ridden end to end in the same vehicle!

The extra long trolley poles on the Memphis cars are due to the factFederal law
that the line crosses main line railroad tracks at grade and
dictates a height of at least 22 feet for trolley wire over thecar
railroad. Many U.S. railroad cars, such as tri-level auto racks and
double stacked containers, are 21 feet high. The track next to the
is a railroad track, hence no trolley wire. The Memphis systemstarted
as a tourist loop line, but is slowly transforming into the firststages
of a light rail line. It has been extended a few times from its'well as
original route, and also used single truck cars from Portugal as
the W2s.
