Melbourne W2 In Memphis

The extra long trolley poles on the Memphis cars are due to the fact
that the line crosses main line railroad tracks at grade and Federal law
dictates a height of at least 22 feet for trolley wire over the
railroad. Many U.S. railroad cars, such as tri-level auto racks and
double stacked containers, are 21 feet high. The track next to the car
is a railroad track, hence no trolley wire. The Memphis system started
as a tourist loop line, but is slowly transforming into the first stages
of a light rail line. It has been extended a few times from its'
original route, and also used single truck cars from Portugal as well as
the W2s.
