That's the best option.

Hi Bob and others,
I see there is quite a list of comments since the idiotic
announcement in the papers about Newport for the tram museum etc, I
hav'nt read the rest so, feel free to jump on me if you feel so
inclined.
Newport would be a disaster, no track connection, stuff and mounted
trams, one visit, ho hum, won't bother going back!
Docklands shed, as Bob puts it, no way you can secure it from vandals
and, whilst a track conection is possible it waould be awckward and
with around three to four tracks (4 would make them jammed in to
close to each other) basically, only the top cars on each road would
ever be used. This would be a far better site for a static railway
museum.
Hawthorn, bloody ludicrous, to small no one shed gone, flats built
above would Essendon Airport all over again, first couple of gongs
and the NIMBY's would be out in force wanting it as a car park!
Nth Fitzroy okay but, really to small and, whilst connected to the
main system, will shortly be isolated (already officially panto only)
as more and more overhead become pan only.
Preston Workshops, Paintshop area okay but, believe it or not, space
that could be used is still very limited and would require the use of
traverser etc and would require unauthorised (best term I could think
of) people around a sensative area, DOI won't go for it.
To me, there is ONLY ONE place, the former Preston depot (commonly
misnamed Thornbury depot, the depot is an historical place (plaque in
place states it as being built for the former Preston and Northcote
Tramways Trust), it has a union history, where the last great stand
for Conductors started in 1989. it has enough space (after fibreglass
shop removed and track restored) for all fleet, has all track work
but needs overhead over track for second shed, admin block would have
to be renovated and would have former revenue room with dummy
conductors paying-in etc so public could get the whole experience and
watch restoration in one shed whilst the other would be running shed.
Close proximity to workshops would allow heavy overhauls/repairs to
be carried out and trams could run between there and the end of the
reservation at Merri creek where the fergie street shunt is to be
relocated or, on certain days, extended to the city via La trobe if
overhead still allows pole operation (that would be simple on first
mentioned segment)as they have put a frog in the new over head for
emergency pole movements.
That's enough for now, what do you guys think?
