I think the gauge difference is only 10 mm (wider in Milan), but
SF found that it was too much, particularly on curves. I
understand that SF "regauged" by regrinding the wheels. What
ever SF did, the cars are now incredibly (and embarassingly)
noisy!

I Pete,

Here is a part of some correspondence I got from Karl Johnson at Muni
that would explain some of the noise, it would seem that the wheels
were regauged but, perhaps not correctly, maybe they need an "inside
grind" to correct to profile.

"Yes they are noisy - loose parts and springs, and when they re-
gauged the
brakes, they did not tighten up the lever slot, so the brake linkage
really
bangs around in there.

The flange wear is OK, just wierd wear on the tread. The center of
the
tread looks like it just ran through a fire place, and that's where
some of
the noise comes from."
