Roy: that was the answer we were looking for! I think it was 1907 but
will check with Ross Willson (historian) for the full gen. The key
was "Melbourne" as Greg eluded to. It was "operated in Melbourne" as
distinct from "operated on the former MMTB system"! Many might say to
me "what a boring person" for asking such a question but I found the
topic to be very interesting. Paul in Melbourne
PS: Just about pop up to Victoria Parade (it's lunch time here) and
inspect the work.

Sydney D's
were purchased in a hurry by the Victorian Railways for use on the
StKilda -
Brighton line when their fleet was destroyed by fire (I can't
remember the
exact date, but 1913 seems familiar).

Of course enthusiasts had not been invented yet, so the act would
not have
been appreciated much, particularly women in the fashion of the day
trying
to jump up on the high steps of the combination cars!

I think the trail is warming but...

Perhaps we might have to go back a bit further in history to find
an
answer to the question.

Any more takers?
