Thank you for all these photos and info, Malcolm.
I am one of those who find the rails and wire part of tramways as
fascinating as the cars, so this is all great stuff. As you will have
gathered, I am intrigued by the way in which the contractors can blitz a
track relay job and get the whole lot done in a weekend (or 4 days in this
case). This job is much bigger than the usual replacement of ordinary
straight track (or a new track, as recently in Whitehorse Rd).
Is this the biggest job to be done in one hit?
Is that straight grooved rail making a comeback? I noticed that sleepers are
not being used on this job, so the Whitehorse Rd track did not represent a
permanent change in practice.
Cheers,
Brent Efford

Route 109 trams were shunted at Brunswick St. As there is no direct
crossover they had to do a double shunt. First they shunted from the
up track down into the layover track. They then shunted from the
layover track onto the down track. A Yarra Trams employee was on hand
to work the points.
I didn't see any Citadis trams shunting. I suspect they were taken off
route 109 today as there didn't appear to be enough distance available
for them between the end of the track and the layover points.
