And so the lesson to be learned is...

Do you think the changes were worth it or is the overview all too complex for the average schmuck who just wants to schlep from A to B or get on down to the local shopping mall?

BTW, how are you, Joe? I haven't been to Melbourne in daylight in months. Pics of the old cable system buildings are still on my agenda. Any of you other guys, Joe's a cable car gunzel and has a good cable car site. He would appreciate any pics you guys have of any of the old Melbourne cable winding houses or depots that are still standing. I've sent him the North Melbourne Winding house and the depot in High Street, Northcote.

Subject: [TramsDownUnder] (ot) Route Numbering Rationalization

There have been recent posts about rationalizing route numbers.  I
can describe the scheme that some highly paid consultants came up
with for SamTrans (San Mateo County Transit), a transit agency that
operates south of San Francisco.

On 15-Aug-1999 SamTrans changed the designation for every single
route on the system, and most of the schedules at the same time.  It
was a mess.

SamTrans route number designations:
     xX "Green" Express route
  1- 99 "Orange" Community route
100-199 "Blue" BART connection
200-299 "Red" Caltrain connection
300-399 "Red and Blue" BART and Caltrain connection

All schedules and signs at bus stops use the colors listed above.
The schedules on their website do not.

The community route numbers are further broken down into ranges of
tens by the cities they serve.  For instance, routes 14-17 serve the
Coastside area, where I live.  Routes 34-36 serve Brisbane and South
San Francisco.

Numbers in the 190s, 290s, and 390s designate intercity routes.  Most
run significant miles on El Camino Real, the primary non-freeway
north-south road on the San Francisco Peninsula.

After a month or two of anarchy, things settled down and the system
seems to work pretty well, although I'll bet most of the riders
aren't aware of it.  The consultants made a nice dollar out of it.
