Sydney Tramway Museum developments

Enjoyed Herman's excellent pictures of the trams at the STM, and also the shot of Brisbane 554 at Ferny Grove.  Those Phoenix cars are handsome trams.

Regarding developments at the the museum at Loftus, the extension of the line into the Sutherland shopping centre has been planned, approved and the various components stockpiled.  The only impediment is the money.

To do the extension,  considerable excavation on part of a fairly busy public road will be required.  To do the work in a reasonable period of time, the job is beyond the capability of the Museum's volunteer workforce.  This means that a professional firm will need to be engaged and the cost is well beyond the means of the Museum.  All is not lost however.  The Museum has had discussions with various bodies and authorities and help has been offered.  Pulling it all together will be the hard part.  As the blond lady in the hair shampoo commercial say, "It won't happen overnight, but it will happen."

Other developments are occuring on the Museum site.  At the moment a three storey building is being erected beside the entry gate.  This building will be fronted by the facade of the recently demolished YMCA building in Pitt St. Sydney.  It's of sandstone construction in gothic style and dates from the late 1890's..  Once the shell of the building is completed and the facade hung, the Museum will complete the interior for use as shops, meeting rooms and members amenities and for archive storeage.  The first stage should be competed by late 2002.
