Yes, though the original Kelburn Cable Tram, 1902 - 79, had a conventional street cable tram gripper plus a balance cable. The original operating system involved the driver (gripman) of the downwards car using the grip and basically hauling the upwards car passively up via the balance cable. Bell signals via a three-wire overhead system co-ordinated the two cars. The current 1979-on Habegger Von Roll system  simply involves a separate cable for each car, with the control taking place electronically in the winding room.

Brent,

I take it that modernised "Cable Tram" is, in fact, a funicular? As opposed to Melbourne and San Francisco-type cable trams?

Like that shot of the trolley buses. More at your convenience, please.

OK - here are 2 photos: the Wellington Cable Tram as promised, taken yesterday on its 100th birthday, and a line up of trolleybuses (at least 1 for every system that ever ran in New Zealand) lined up for the grand parade for the Trolley Bus Festival on 28 March 1999. The Festival was held to commemorate 50 years of continuous trolleybus operation in Wellington. I have dozens of such photos, but there is a limit to patience and bandwidth! Christchurch 210, of 1931 vintage, in front (believed to be the oldest operating trolleybus in the world).

There is, or was, a Wellington trolleybus website, but it used a very obscure URL which I lost when my PC was upgraded a while ago. I will try and find it.

Cheers,

Brent Efford

I'm in favour of covering trolley buses in NZ and Australia on this group.

In much the same way as Peter's Muni History group covers trolley buses.

The technology is very similar and they did the same sort of work, often for operators who also ran trams.

-G'day Peter, there a few bits and pieces of trolleybus interest, contributed by WGB at [email protected],you may be interested to have a look.WGB,I am sure, could point you in the direction of some more specialised NZ trolleybus groups.I would be happy to see more trolleybus stuff on TDU as well,I would not regard it as off topic, what does everyone else think? We've had a Birney-a-ganza how about a Trolleybus-a-ganza?I know bugger all about them and would like to change that.PBruce.-- In TramsDownUnder@y..., "groompg" <groomp@s...> wrote:
