Now that I have a bit more time to reach for the right book's I can answer your questions to the dates of the Z 3 departure from North Fitzroy and the opening of the light rail lines.

On September the 7th 1987 all Z 3's were transfered from North Fitzroy to Essendon depot, thus Essendon Depot became an all Z class depot.
The W class trams from Essendon Depot were transfered to Kew Depot and A2 class trams from Kew Depot were transfered to North Fitzroy.

On May 25 1987 A class trams comenced operation at South Melbourne Depot.

On November 22 1987 the light rail line opened to St Kilda and was operated with A2 class trams along with B class 2001 and 2002 from South Melbourne and North Fitzroy Depots.

On December 20 1987 the Port Melbourne light rail line opened.
Note the original route of the Port Melbourne light rail line ran from Port Melbourne along the light rail line to Claredon st ,Spencer st ,then turned into Bourke st. along Spring st. and Nicholson st terminating outside the Exhibition Buildings just north of Gertrude st.

September 1 1988 B class trams comenced operating the light rail route St Kilda to East Brunswick from South Melbourne Depot.

November 20 1988 After the depot fan at North Fitzroy Depot was altered to a trianguler layout North Fitzroy began running B class trams on the East Brunswick St Kida light rail. The overhead was altered for pantograph operation only at the depot fan and this ended the Z class trams from Preston Depot operating to North Fitzroy and East Brunswick in the peak hours.

In April 1989 B class trams began to operate the Port Melbourne light rail service.

Janurary 20 1991 Both light rail routes operated exclusivey by B class trams.

December 19 1992  Noth Fitzroy depot closed as a tram depot with the transfere of the operation of East Brunswick to St Kilda route 96 to South Melbourne depot. At the same time the Port Melbourne light rail route was altered by eliminating the Exhibition route and extending the Mont Albert to City trams to operate to Port Melbourne.and Kew Depot to operate it with A class trams.
