G'day all,I wasn't sure about attachments so I posted a couple of
photos to the photo section.The first is Bendigo car no.7 at Golden
Square,outside Billy Roddas pub.1970 or 1971 I'd say,a late afternoon
in summer,windows open and blinds down.Maybe the motorman is in
Roddas having a quiet,and very cold,beer before he sets off again for
North Bendigo.You could do that in those days.The other was taken in
the early 90s.On Sundays Essendon depot used to run the L car out to
the Royal Park shunt as an extra service serving the Zoo.For those
who havn't learned the road the crossover is just around the far
curve and the L is heading back up the hill towards Elliot Ave.and
the City.WGB,I very much liked the tales of schoolboy mischief in New
Plymouth,at South Melbourne we had a driver called Brian G.....,he
was a good enough bloke but rather bossy and a fusspot.There was a
late car which ran out of the depot to West Preston,he was running
this service one night with a great mate of mine called Iain
Sutherland as his connie,they came up Park St.,clattered over the
special work at Clarendon St. and stopped to shunt back and then take
the points into Clarendon,Iain pulled down the rear pole and changed
the points ,Brian put up the pole at his end,grabbed the handles and
scuttled through to change ends.He pulled forward to the Clarendon
St. points which of course were set for the straight,No point
bar,door opens"bar" he squeals,"get it yourself"says Sutherland so
Brian fusses and complains back to the other cabin.Legendary tram fan
Dave Macartney steps from the shadows with his personal pointbar and
silently changes the points then disappears back into aforesaid
shadows,Brian G.. arrives back, bar in hand,points
changed!!,Whodunit??He doesn't know to this day.Daves point bar was
very special,it must have belonged to Stan Freburg,it bore the
