I have received the attached plea from GK.
Unfortunately I had to explain to him in a message within the TWW
group, that a lot of my old archives had been passed on to others
some years ago under circumstances that do not concern anyone but
myself.
I replied to him in TWW, (and the messages can be seen by anyone
interested,) but I have no intention of bringing up the past. It
would achieve little and upset much.
If anyone can help, I am sure GK would be very appreciative.
I do recall there were a lot of Preston pictures of all types of cars
obviously posed for publicity, and a few accident pics.

WGB,
Would you happen to have in your collection, one of the ex-MMTB
official pictures I gave you years ago, of Y1 610 when it was
converted to a PCC in 1949, you may remember, it had been selected to
have the equipment destined for 980, though 610 was completely
stripped of original equipment (K35) and had the full PCC gear
including foot controls fitted in 1949, it was run out onto
the "depot fan" in front of the paint shop for photos and to be
inspected by the union, management and politicians, the union took
one look at the driver's layout and the door layout, saw the one-man
potential and went bullistic and stated, "if this car goes out the
Workshop gates like this, every tram in Melbourne will be run in to
their depots". So 610 (it was to have been reclassified as a YP) was
run back into the Engineering shop and had the equipment removed, 980
was the next even number available in the W6 program, so, it was
selected to be built as the PCC car but with hand controls to appease
the union.
It was easy for them to use a Y1 as the straight floor allowed easy
location of the PCC equipment where as, as you know, 980 had to be
built with a straight floor instead of the "drop centre" which caused
loading problems in later years. So the MMTB B3 trucks rode under
three different car types, this might be some kind of record for one
set of trucks.
Anyway, if you can find that picture, perhaps you could re-post this
to TDU in case someone else has a copy.
